Avoid the drift: Get your health and fitness back

My wife Charlie and I had traveled five hours on a tin bird to get to the big island. On our list of things we wanted to do, snorkeling at two-step beach was one of them.

It was a beautuful Hawaii morning and conditions were movie-like for a day at the beach. After breakfast washed down with a few cups of Kona coffee, we hopped in our two-door rented wrangler. We opened the top, cracked the windows, and plugged Kygo radio into the stereo. After twenty minutes of tropical happy house music, some bad car dancing and the island winds blowing in our face, we had arrived at two-step beach.

Putting the gear on felt like trying to perform a magic trick for the first time. The mask was so tight on me that I swore my eyeballs were going to jump right out of their sockets. I tripped over myself several times with the flippers. Charlie, on the other hand, had no problem at all maneuvering herself with snorkel gear.

Once we got out far enough to start snorkeling, it was like we were swimming in one large aquarium - except it was open water. I've never seen so many colors of fish under water before. The varied and extensive shallow-water coral gardens were too beautiful to remember. We even brushed up against a sea turtle.

Consumed by the experience, we had not lifted our heads above water to see where we had ended up. Although I had no watch on me, I would guess we were snorkeling for about an hour. When we did finally poke our heads up from the water, we realized we had drifted hundreds of yards out to sea . . . uncomfortably far from shore. We ended up at a destination we had not intended to arrive at. This is known as the drift.

Knowing this, we dropped the desire for pleasure immediately, and invested our efforts in swimming back to safety.

Life can have the same effect on us. It's so easy to get pulled off course by the riptide of our day-to-day. And then one day, we lift our heads up from the water to see that we've drifted far from something important in our lives - our health and fitness being one of them.

Here's the reality: Nobody sets out to purposefully let their health and fitness fail. I've never met anyone who makes it their purpose to be 28 pounds overweight. Not a single person is working at achieving chronically low-energy levels as their goal.

Instead, the insidious drift of life slowly takes us to these places. It's not overnight, but over time, without paying attention we become victims of the drift in regards to our health and fitness. We end up at a destination we had not intended to arrive at and then ask ourselves, "How did we get here?"

But I've got good news.

I've got something that will help you conquer or even completely avoid the drift.
